Future Leader Phillipa
11 Aug 2016
Philippa, one of Nelsonspirit’s Future Leaders who received a Future Leaders Fund grant back in November 2015, has recently returned from her programme in India. Her interests in gender issues, women’s rights and education were served well by the projects she undertook with the International Citizen Service and Pravah organisation.
Having raised the £1,500 necessary – partly from the Nelsonspirit Future Leaders Fund – Philippa embarked on her 13-hour journey to New Delhi from where she went to start her programme in the Harda District of Madhya Pradesh for three months where she did significant work in a Youth Resource Centre. Although the houses they stayed in were, as she describes them, “wonderfully basic”, she notes that “the families welcomed us in with all their heart and made us very comfortable.”
The work she undertook on the project was varied and significant, including the establishment of links between the local college and schools; the delivery of regular workshops to locals based on issues such as gender and domestic violence; and use of social media to allow the young people to express themselves through forums and videos – all in the hope of giving them a voice they may otherwise not have had. Philippa tells us the changes her project made to the local centre they worked with and its members were “remarkable” by engendering a new thirst for learning within the community.
We were delighted to hear of the benefits of Philippa’s grant and wish her well, particularly in her new role as a ‘Young Women’s Development Worker’ at the Girls Friendly Society. Please refer to our ‘Future Leaders Fund’ page for more information on the Fund and how to apply.
