Future Leader Saul is the most recent beneficiary of the nelsonspirit Future Leaders Fund. Saul is off to Toledo, in Southern Belize, on a six week voluntary fieldwork trip to help with the conservation and sustainability in both the forest and marine ecosystem.
In particular Saul will be protecting the Central American River Turtle which is classified as critically endangered and combating the invasive predatory Lionfish which poses a threat to the coral reef ecosystem.
Saul will also be helping to implement sustainable practises into the local community through a reforestation project, providing economic alternatives to fishing and educating in sustainable practice.
Saul says..."'I am looking forward to applying the field-skills that I have learnt throughout my degree to the jungles and coastal reefs of Belize. It will be an amazing opportunity to help conserve this country's rich and wonderful flora and fauna. Working with the local communities to reach more sustainable practices will certainly pose its challenges - but this makes the project all the more rewarding!
