Nelsonspirit's First Future Leader Creates Scholarship Programme

11 Jul 2016

After speaking to Lasith Ranasinghe back in 2013 when he was 17 and hearing about the plans for his charity Smile we were keen to support him on his journey. Lasith inspired us to set up the Future Leaders Fund and was the first ever Nelsonspirit Future Leader. Since then we have made 26 grants to Norfolk young people to help them grow as leaders, whilst helping others in communities all over the world. Lasith has made some amazing developments in Sri Lanka and is thrilled to announce this week that Smile has now started working with the Foundation of Goodness to create three ‘Smile Scholarships’ for students in rural parts of Sri Lanka! The two year scholarship will support these students with accommodation fees, welfare, educational equipment and exam and tuition costs. Many school-aged children in rural parts of Sri Lanka have to drop out of school to start working and earning in order to support their families. The Smile Scholarships will hopefully give the financial boost necessary to allow the children to complete their education and escape poverty. We congratulate Lasith on his fantastic work and for setting the pace and for being an inspiration to future Norfolk Leaders.
